Regarding a potential trade involving young Montreal Canadiens defenseman Justin Barron, journalist Mathias Brunet made an interesting statement.

Especially since the beginning of the week, Barron's name has increasingly surfaced in trade rumors, and it seems Kent Hughes might be open to trading him for the right price (especially if a young player like Logan Mailloux has a strong training camp).

His name has been linked to the Edmonton Oilers:

But surely, other teams would also be interested in a young right-shot defenseman, who was a first-round pick of the Colorado Avalanche and is under a very reasonable contract.

A first-round pick for Justin Barron? That's what Kent Hughes was expecting in return a few months ago.

On BPM Sports radio, the excellent journalist Mathias Brunet made a rather surprising statement.

As training camp approaches, and with significant decisions looming for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens, Brunet is among those who believe the Habs will try to trade Justin Barron.

It's a possibility, and it's not too surprising.

However, here's what is surprising.

Here's what Brunet thinks about Justin Barron's current trade value in the NHL market.

«Last year, the club thought they could get a late first-round pick in return for his services. [...]

Brunet doesn't believe that Montreal will let him go for a second-round pick, anyway.»

- Raphaël Simard

Wow. So we're still talking about quite significant value.

Good for Kent Hughes if he's asking for a high price and doesn't want to give him away easily.

After all, he cost the Montreal Canadiens Artturi Lehkonen in that well-known trade with the Colorado Avalanche.

This will be a really interesting situation to watch, because on one hand, we're hearing talk of a first-round pick, while on the other hand, some believe Justin Barron could be placed on waivers.

In any case, let's just hope Barron can have a strong 2024 training camp with the Canadiens, find some consistency, and become part of the solution for Martin St-Louis' squad.

He still has good potential!
