In the last few minutes, journalist Sheng Peng, who covers the San Jose Sharks, has just given us some interesting news.

Another trade was going to be announced on Friday, involving the New York Rangers and forward Alexander Barabanov, but it was canceled due to the trade of Tomas Hertl to Las Vegas.

Clearly, the Sharks' GM was quite busy last Friday.

The trade of Tomas Hertl caused another one to fall through!

So, it was indeed a trade that fell through at the very last minute. The New York Rangers would have acquired Alexander Barabanov, a forward who would have certainly helped them a lot.

Why was everything canceled?

Because the Sharks used their last available salary retention slot for the trade of Tomas Hertl, they could no longer retain the salary of Barabanov, which caused the trade to be canceled.

The Rangers could not afford a full-salary Barabanov.

"The Rangers were reportedly set to acquire Alexander Barabanov from the Sharks on Friday but the club using their last retention slot on the Tomas Hertl trade made this deal fall through." - NHL News

Barabanov, 29, amassed nearly 50 points in 68 games last season and 10 points in 39 games this season.

In his NHL career, he has accumulated 104 points in 199 games, including 31 goals, and he earns an annual salary of $2.5 million.
