Mikko Rantanen is one of the best players in the world and is on track to become a free agent, which is intriguing for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens.
While we are far from anything concrete, there was an interesting discussion about this on BPM Sports.
Let's recall that in a recent article, the excellent Sportsnet journalist Eric Engels mentioned that, according to him, Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton would do everything they can to try to acquire Mikko Rantanen this summer.
The topic was also brought up again today on BPM Sports.
A $14 Million Contract for Mikko Rantanen with the Montreal Canadiens: Would You Do It?
Here's the excerpt in question:
«If Rantanen became a free agent, would you object to the Canadiens offering him $14 million per year?» - Gonzo
I don't believe it. With Hage, Demidov, and all those guys whose entry-level contracts will eventually expire, you'll have to re-sign them. You can't do this with Rantanen; it doesn't work. He'll get his $14 million, but it won't be in Montreal. - Laraque
Montreal is in a rebuild, and managing money and entry-level contracts is super important to ensure you stay under the salary cap. - Laraque
You're in a rebuild. Maybe the Canadiens would want to speed up the rebuild like they did with Laine, but here we're talking about double Laine's salary. - Gonzo
Laraque explains that he doesn't believe in it, saying it won't work, it won't happen, and the Canadiens simply can't do it.
It's an interesting discussion nonetheless.
And you, what's your opinion on the matter?
Both hosts agree that Rantanen will get his $14 million per year but believe it won't be in Montreal.
Mikko Rantanen, 28 years old, 6 feet 4 inches, and 215 pounds, is one of the top forwards in the National Hockey League.
The 10th overall pick in 2015 (1st round) has a sensational 61 points in 45 games this season, including 25 goals, after collecting 104 and 105 points in the last two seasons.
He currently earns $9.25 million per year and will be an unrestricted free agent next July unless he signs a contract extension.
In terms of points per 82 games over the past five seasons, Rantanen has recorded 113 points, 107 points, 105 points, 101 points, and 104 points.
More details to follow.
