We knew it was coming, Alex Ovechkin's contract extension with the Washington Capitals. The news was shared directly by the captain via his Twitter account.
Ovi, who will turn 36 in September, just put pen to paper on a new five-season deal with HIS team, the Washington Capitals. The contract will pay him an average of $9.5 million annually, which is huge for an aging player. He is getting older, but the downward slope has not yet begun in his case.
There was no question for number 8 on going elsewhere, as he has the Caps logo tattooed on his heart. He's always been authentic about it, he's going to retire as a member of the Washington Capitals. He'll be nearly 41 years old when his contract ends, giving him a chance to move closer to Wayne Gretzky atop the scoring charts.
Let's do some math, shall we? Gretzky has scored 894 goals in his career, while Ovi currently has 730 on the clock. So 894 minus 730 is 164. Then 164 spread over five (seasons), that's about 33 goals per season. Honestly, it's far from impossible. If Ovechkin stays in shape, as he always did since the beginning of his career, and if he manages to make it until the age of 40, it is possible. We are talking about a war machine!
Personally, I am very happy with this signing because he remains my favorite player in the league!
