He has just signed a one season contract (base salary at $2.5M) with the Bruins. A great deal for Boston.
As for his comments, we have retained a very revealing line, a comment that says a lot about the person and the athlete that Bergeron is.
It just goes to show how real the Boston Bruins' #37 is. There's also this:
That's the kind of comment we've heard many times from another Boston-area great: Tom Brady, back when he was playing for the Patriots.
Bergeron's logic is that he has made "enough" money, over the course of his career, and he wants to allow the Bruins to keep space under the salary cap to continue to be competitive and to bring in other good players.
He wants to sacrifice his own salary, to give his team a better chance to win. Wow.
Yet, even though he's obviously far from having money problems, it should be mentioned that Bergeron has been "underpaid" throughout his career, in the sense that he's never made more than 6.8 million a year, even though he's been one of the best all-around players in the NHL for a long time.
Don't get us wrong. We're just saying here that with the career he has, for many years he was probably worth more than $10 million a year like a Jonathan Toews. Bergeron was worth less than $6.9 million.
And here he is, taking on another low contract, to help his team once again, even though many other organizations would probably have offered him double or triple that.
Hats off to Patrice Bergeron!
