For the past few weeks, this has been a hot topic in Montreal.
Sean Monahan has been impressive with the Montreal Canadiens, but the fact is that the team continues to look to the future and Monahan's contract expires at the end of the season.
So a contending team will most likely offer a first round pick, or a solid prospect, to get their hands on Monahan to finish the season. Regardless of how you feel about it, this is an offer Kent Hughes will have to consider.
When asked about this in the last few minutes, reporter Eric Engels, who covers the Habs for Sportsnet, was very direct.
Question:
"The chances of Monahan being traded versus re-signed? I think there would be some upside to keeping him, but the offers will obviously be too good to pass up."
Engels' response:
"He will be traded. Unless there is a serious injury or the market (unexpectedly) doesn't bring in the right value.
The Tricolore loves him, but still...."
That's a clear answer, and it's definitely going to be an extremely interesting case to watch. Do you agree with the excellent Eric Engels?
Let's add that this doesn't mean Monahan won't be back next year. Kent Hughes could still sign him this summer, even if he trades him before the deadline.
Monahan, 28, already has 16 points in 23 games this season.
