Cole Caufield being placed on the 3rd or 4th line of the Montreal Canadiens: it makes absolutely no sense according to Michel Bergeron
Back on the air last night on TVA Sports, expert Michel Bergeron took the opportunity to denounce a situation that, according to him, makes absolutely no sense.
He doesn't understand why the young Cole Caufield has been placed with the 3rd or 4th center of the Montreal Canadiens. Technically, this makes Caufield a player who is currently on the 3rd or 4th line of his team, and Bergeron is questioning this decision.
Analyzing this, it's true that Caufield has been playing less since he was separated from Nick Suzuki, and it's also true that Christian Dvorak's line has been the third most used by Martin St-Louis.
So, it's not wrong to say that Caufield is currently on the 3rd line. (not on the 4th, however)
Suzuki - nearly 21 minutes on the ice
Monahan - nearly 18 minutes on the ice
Dvorak - 15 minutes on the ice
Evans - 12 minutes on the ice
And it's very similar for the wingers of these respective lines. Caufield's usage at 5-on-5 is therefore decreased, but he continues to play as much on the power play and at the end of games.
See an excerpt from Michel Bergeron's statement on this matter.
"Playing with Christian Dvorak isn't going to make Caufield's team win. The Canadiens' top scorer is Cole Caufield... what's he doing with the 3rd or 4th center? I don't understand."
"It's time to place Caufield with Sean Monahan. Everyone likes his line, but it's time for a change." Do you like the idea? And you, with which center player would you place Cole with?
In any case, it will be interesting to see his use tonight.
