Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid was frustrated in the locker room after his team's 4-3 shootout loss to the St. Louis Blues on Thursday.

That's because McDavid thought he had recorded an assist when Leon Draisaitl gave the Oilers the win on an overtime goal, but the play was called back, prompting him to express his frustration with NHL officiating.

With just under three minutes left in overtime, McDavid carried the puck through the Blues' zone and sent it to Draisaitl who found the back of Jordan Binnington's net. The play was offside though, at least that's what the NHL ruled.

The Oilers subsequently lost in a shootout, falling to a 17-13-1 record this season with the loss, failing to pass the Seattle Kraken for third place in the Pacific Division.

"Ever since I was a kid, I've thought that if you have possession of the puck (going over the blue line), it's in play. If I had possession or not, I guess it's [the referee's] judgment call."

"The league needs to clarify some of these rules. What is a kick? What is offside? What is goalie interference? Depends on the night, I guess. It's disappointing. Obviously, we never should have let it get to that point." - Connor McDavid

We remember that last summer, the NHL allowed a goal, Cale Makar, very similar in the playoffs. So it is understandable that the players feel lost with this rule!

McDavid, who scored his 27th goal of the season in the second period and continues to lead the league in goals and points, is probably hoping that his status in the NHL will prompt the officials to review their offside standards...
