In a game in Sweden's low-tier league, a historically dirty player laid a hit on the referee resulting in a broken arm for the referee.

Ref Gets Arm Broken By Hit

Casper Gillberg, a 22-year-old 6'5" 227 lbs defenseman, laid a referee out in what looked like a blatant attack on the ref.

Before the incident, Gillberg had been impressing scoring 12 points in 11 games as a defenseman. On top of this, Gillberg had 26 PIMs and had been suspended for 9 games earlier in the season.

Gillberg Claims It Was An Accident

Gillberg later spoke on the play and revealed how he did not intend to lay the referee out.

"It's the final of the series and everyone is excited out there, especially me, who likes to play physically. The referee gets in the way, as he did the whole game. I had to stop their player and then the referee got in the way. Then he had to take the hit even though it was not the intention, of course." - Casper Gillberg

Gillberg is currently suspended until he has a hearing but there is a solid chance that Gillberg loses the right to play in his league for the rest of the year due to this play.
