Gaudreau is sure to be the most coveted uncompensated free agent this summer as he finished the season with an impressive 115 points, good for second in the NHL behind Connor McDavid.
He is expected to command a salary of around $10 million per season and many experts believe that Gaudreau should test the free agent market.
But should he leave the Flames organization, one informant made a rather interesting suggestion.
As reported by Fanadiens.com, Elliotte Friedman suggests that several NHL teams should make a call to Flames general manager Brad Treliving to inquire about Gaudreau's availability and attempt to acquire his trading rights.
They need to move quickly, however.
Friedman adds that the idea of trading Gaudreau's rights could be interesting for the Flames, should negotiations reach an impasse.
Since the Habs have several picks in the next draft, could Kent Hughes be tempted by the idea of acquiring the rights to Johnny Gaudreau?
The idea is interesting, but since the Habs are pretty much stuck with the payroll, it would be quite surprising if Hughes would sacrifice draft picks just to have the right to negotiate with a player who is unlikely to sign in Montreal.
