Kent Hughes took everyone by surprise when he made the decision to trade young defenseman Alexander Romavov to the New York Islanders for the thirteenth overall pick and a fourth round pick in the 2022 NHL draft.

Despite the fact that the price Lou Lamoriello paid to acquire him was rather high, many experts believe that Romanov is unlikely to become an elite NHL defenseman and as reported by David St-Jean, of Marqueur.com, a former Habs player went on record with a rather harsh statement towards the young defenseman.

Maxim Lapierre, an analyst for TVA Sports, mentioned via his Twitter account that Romanov would not have been a top 5 defenseman in the near future and that many of the organization's young D's will have a head start on him when it comes time to win.

Rebuilding = Romanov will not be ahead of Guhle , Harris , Mailloux , Barron and Xhekaj when it comes time to win . I really liked Romanov by the way." - Max Lapierre

Still, he mentioned that he really liked #27 and it's true that he improved very well last season, especially under Martin St-Louis.

But it seems that this was the price to pay for acquiring Kirby Dach with the thirteenth pick in the Islanders trade and for Habs fans, it remains to hope that Lapierre will be right in a few years and that other young defensemen in the organization will take off in the years to come.
