Last May, Jason Spezza announced his retirement after 1,248 games in the NHL. The Toronto Maple Leafs wasted no time in naming him special assistant to general manager Kyle Dubas the same day.
Even though he's still in the hockey world, Spezza has to start his learning curve all over again. Video from a game at the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup, an international under-18 tournament currently underway in Red Deer, Alberta, proves that he has to learn on the job.
You'll notice how the rookie works and looks lost compared to veterans like Steve Yzerman, Ron Hextall and Kevin Cheveldayoff.
All kidding aside, Spezza is considered by some to be a plausible replacement for Kyle Dubas should the latter be fired by the organization. His leadership off and on the ice makes him a leader, not to mention his expertise in the hockey world. A year of learning the job could make him a solid hockey manager.
