As you know, this summer, many rumors were circulating about forward Jonathan Huberdeau, with many experts linking his name to the Montreal Canadiens.
Huberdeau would become a free agent in 2023, and even after his trade to the Calgary Flames, many believed that the star forward would play one year in Calgary before signing with the Tricolore.
HUBERDEAU SPEAKS OUT
Several weeks later, the Quebec forward finally spoke out about all of this and his interest in the Canadiens. For those who are wondering, yes, Huberdeau did hear the rumors sending him to Montreal:
"I know a lot of people were suggesting I play a year in Calgary and then join the Habs." - Jonathan Huberdeau, on the 32 Thoughts podcast.
He continues:
"Even though I love Montreal, I don't know. I think it's a tough city for Quebecers. The Flames acquired me. If the Habs wanted my services, they would have made a deal for it. I want to play for a team that wants me." - Huberdeau
Recall that Jonathan Huberdeau recently signed a monster eight-year, $84 million contract extension. As we reported earlier this summer, the famous meeting with Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving, who came to Montreal, it actually weighed heavily in Huberdeau's decision:
"When Brad came to Montreal, we had a great discussion. We didn't talk about a contract; we got to know each other more. I like his philosophy and the direction the team is going. I am joining a team that can win now. That's why I wanted to commit to this team and know that I will be playing in Calgary for the next nine years."

Basically, the takeaway is that while Huberdeau loves Montreal, he wasn't necessarily a fan of the idea of playing for the Canadiens. He was well aware of the rumors that were going around, and it made him think about it, but in the end, he's really happy to be with the Calgary Flames, a team that can win now and a team that really wanted him.
