The young Slovakian signed his first professional contract and his salary will count for $950,000 on the team's payroll, but as Max Truman of Danslescoulisses.com reports, Slafkovsky could be making much more money in 2022-2023.
According to CapFriendly, the Habs' first-round pick will earn an annual bonus of $95,000 and a base salary of $855,000 for next season, except that if he were to play for the Laval Rocket in the AHL, his salary would be $82,500.
However, Slafkovsky could make even more money with his performance bonuses. His salary could go up to $4.45 million per year.
When it comes to performance bonuses, there are two types, Type A and Type B.
Type A involves reaching four plateaus, each of which pays $250,000, for a total of $1 million. Type B bonuses can be as high as $2.5 million.
You can view the performance requirements to reach the performance bonuses by clicking here.
When compared to the first NHL draft picks of the past few years, this is a record for performance bonuses. Even Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews did not have access to such bonuses.
But since Type B bonuses are pretty hard to come by for an 18-year-old, it would be pretty surprising if Slafkovsky were to earn a total of $4.45 million in his first NHL season.
However, he should still get some attention when the Habs open training camp next year and who knows, maybe he will be one of the favorites for the Calder Trophy when the various experts make their predictions for the 2022-2023 season.
