After spending the season without a captain due to the absence of Shea Weber, the situation should be very different next season. While many experts are already saying that the number 6's contract should be traded this summer, this will open the door for a new captain in Montreal.

As reported by my colleagues at Fanadiens.com, Sportsnet tipster Eric Engels has published an article where he discusses several topics with the Habs, including the next captain.

While many would give that title to forward Nick Suzuki, Engels would instead see defenseman Joel Edmundson inheriting the C on his jersey. He says Suzuki would be an excellent choice but because his big contract starts next season, it could put unnecessary pressure on him.

With Edmundson as captain, Engels believes it could be the best short-term solution for the team since he is already a leader in the locker room and his presence could allow the organization's young defensemen to have a mentor they can look up to.

An appointment that might surprise many, but would be somewhat temporary and beneficial for the young Suzuki.

The analyst also adds that he does not expect Edmundson to renew his contract with the team, which still has two more years to go, which could allow Nick Suzuki to take the captaincy afterwards. Number 14, Suzuki, will be 24 years old by that time.

Do you agree with Eric Engels' comments?

In any case, there is one thing we are absolutely certain of, and it has been confirmed by Kent Hughes: there will be an announcement before the next season to name a new captain.
