The privileged relationship maintained by Alex Ovechkin with Russian President Vladimir Putin is no secret. While Ovechkin has insisted in the past that he is not a political person, he has still made some statements in the past.
Because of that, and obviously, because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Washington Capitals decided to keep Ovi out of the spotlight today.
«I expect Alex Ovechkin to be available to the media in the coming days. He was asked this morning but the Caps want to stay focused on tonight's game against Rangers, Ovechkin has been kept away from reporters." said journalist Samantha Pell.
«Ovechkin wants more time before talking about Russia's attack on Ukraine. Ovechkin's wife, children, mother and father are in Russia."
TSN's Rick Westhead believes Ovechkin will get help from the Capitals to respond.
«There is no doubt that the Washington Capitals are working with Alex Ovechkin on how to answer questions about Russia's invasion of Ukraine,» he said.
ESPN's Greg Wyshynski thinks it's 100% legitimate to ask Ovechkin about this :
Interestingly enough, the Caps play the Rangers on Thursday night. While Ovechkin and Artermi Panarin have played together while representing Russia, they have different opinions of their leader. Panarin has been adamant in his opposition to Putin and his regime.
