Indeed, like Juraj Slafkovsky, Shane Wright broke into the starting lineup and like Slafkovsky, Wright played his first regular season game yesterday.
This morning, many Montreal journalists and fans are talking about the fact that Slafkovsky has been used very little by head coach Martin St-Louis, some even (already) calling for him to be sent to the American Hockey League immediately.
Slafkovsky played 10 minutes and 34 seconds of playing time.
Don't think that's much? Wait until you see Shane Wright's ice time.
After a disappointing training camp and some public criticism from his head coach, the fourth overall pick in the 2022 draft has a lot of work to do to earn the trust of his boss, Dave Hakstol.
His ice time yesterday? 6 minutes 14 seconds.
He was, by far, the least used rookie player yesterday. If many believe that Slafkovsky hardly played at all, well, he played almost twice as much as Shane Wright.
Ice time of each of the rookie players in uniform last night:
Shane Wright 6:14
Nils Aman 10:02
Pavol Regenda 10:16
Juraj Slafkovsky 10:34
Jakub Lauko 11:36
Arber Xhekaj 12:47
Andrei Kuzmenko 17:43
Filip Roos 17:49
Kaiden Guhle 22:34
You read that right. The most used rookie player yesterday was Kaiden Guhle, who looked like anything but a rookie. This one will be pretty special!
As for Wright, who was obviously completely ignored by his head coach, it will be interesting to see if his playing time increases over the next few games.
Let's face it, 6 minutes is almost ridiculous and far from ideal for the development of a young player. Will Dave Hakstol at least include him in his game plan tonight against the Kings? Or will he be ignored again? Stay tuned!
