Trade concluded between the Montreal Canadiens and Calgary a year ago: a real steal and the Flames look very bad for having paid to trade Sean Monahan

There are trades that age extremely poorly for an organization, and clearly, a year later, we can definitively say that the trade concluded between the Montreal Canadiens and the Calgary Flames involving Sean Monahan is one of them.

Let's remember that in August 2022, forward Sean Monahan was traded to the Canadiens, along with a first-round pick, in exchange for future considerations.

Essentially, Monahan and a first-round pick were given to Montreal.

The Flames notably concluded this transaction with Kent Hughes to make room on their salary cap in order to sign free agent Nazem Kadri.

They had also just signed a very large contract with Jonathan Huberdeau.

In short, here is a small assessment as of today, and it doesn't even come from a Montreal journalist.

"Sean Monahan has 8 points in his first 9 games of the season and has a +5 differential for the Habs - in addition to producing on special teams.

The Flames gave a 1st round pick to the CH to get rid of Monahan the same summer they added Huberdeau and Kadri.

Huberdeau and Kadri combined currently have 7 points, a differential of -21

Ouch!"

What a steal by Kent Hughes!

Honestly, even if his contract is expiring and even if he is involved in trade rumors, we sincerely believe that Sean Monahan can be part of the medium/long term solution for the Montreal Canadiens.

He's only 29 years old.

And he's really good! What do you think?
