With the potential departure of Jesperi Kotkaniemi to the Carolina Hurricanes, everyone expects Marc Bergevin to make a big move to fill the hole that KK would leave. The most popular names are Elias Pettersson, Christian Dvorak and Jack Eichel, but could he simply turn to Eric Staal again?

The 36-year-old veteran is not as good as he once was, but he did a lot of good for the Montreal Canadiens during his brief stay. He got off to a great start with the Habs, only to become quieter afterwards, but he proved his worth in the playoffs. Along with Corey Perry and Joel Armia, they formed a very effective unit in the playoffs.

For the Habs, at the time of writing this short post, they are not only lacking a center to back up Nick Suzuki, but also leadership. Do I need to remind you that Corey Perry and Shea Weber, two great leaders, are no longer with the Canadiens? The first one opted for the hot sun of Tampa Bay, while the second one will miss the next season.

Staal wore the captain's "C" for seven years in Carolina, and he also wore an "A" on a Minnesota Wild jersey for a few years. He has that aura to guide the kids and help the Habs in many important facets, despite his advanced age and slowing down. Staal would not cost much in salary, especially since he is an unrestricted free agent... Then, if it doesn't work out, Marc Bergevin can make a trade during the season, even if it's not obvious.

In short, we'll be talking about this until Marc Bergevin comes out in front of the media to announce his decision in the Jesperi Kotkaniemi' situation.
