It's a big gesture from a great leader, and a gesture that very few players are willing to make.
However, there is one current Montreal Canadiens player who appears to be willing to do the same.
He's obviously not Sidney Crosby, he's not a star player, but that doesn't take away any merit from his extremely impressive gesture.
You read that right.
Say what you will about Joel Armia, but he's the real deal, and he loves Montreal.
It took a lot of character to do what he did last season, going from a demotion to the AHL (and a stint on NHL waivers) to finishing the season as the third-best goal scorer for the Montreal Canadiens in terms of goals per game. (17 goals in 66 games)
Additionally, Armia has become a solid, big penalty-killing forward.
In short, regarding the Finnish forward, journalist Arpon Basu recently mentioned this:
He added that Armia genuinely loves being in Montreal and is really willing to make a lot of concessions, simply for the good of the Canadiens.
How many veterans would have sulked and requested a trade after being placed on waivers by their team? Many!
Well, Armia would respond here by giving a big gift to Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton by agreeing to sign a discounted contract.
Hats off!
Joel Armia's contract, which earns him $3.4 million a year, expires in 2025. It's certain that many teams will be interested in adding him to their roster
