Commentator believes an unexpected goalie could become Canadiens' No. 1 this year
Unlike last year, there will be no three-man rotation in goal for the Montreal Canadiens this season under Martin St-Louis' squad.
Barring an injury, Samuel Montembeault and Cayden Primeau will be the two goaltenders to start the 2024-2025 season.
While many experts agree that Montembeault should secure the number one spot, Anthony Marcotte of BPM Sports, who has long observed Primeau play with the Rocket as the team's play-by-play commentator, made a rather surprising statement regarding him.
Anthony Marcotte believes Cayden Primeau could challenge Samuel Montembeault
As reported by the Marqueur website, Marcotte suggested that Cayden Primeau could very well finish the season with the same number of starts as Samuel Montembeault and added that he has a higher potential to become the number one goalie!
«In the long run, Cayden Primeau has a higher potential to be a #1 than Samuel Montembeault.»
It's clear that some hockey fans in Quebec will disagree with this statement, but the fact remains that Primeau had some excellent moments last season, where he maintained a 2.99 goals-against average in 23 starts.
He also earned his first two career NHL shutouts.
Despite this statement from the BPM Sports journalist, Samuel Montembeault will undoubtedly be Martin St-Louis' trusted man at the start of the season, but that could change if he struggles.
