Gary Bettman and the National Hockey League have just revealed bad news for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens, and it complicates everything.
It will complicate the task for Martin St-Louis if he wants to cause a surprise and bring the Canadiens to the playoffs as early as 2025.
The new schedule, unveiled by the NHL, shows that the Canadiens are one of the most disadvantaged teams in the entire NHL in terms of travel and the fatigue that comes with it.
The Canadiens are disadvantaged by the new schedule put together by the NHL
As reported by TVA Sports, despite their proximity to several teams in Canada and the northern United States, Montreal will have to travel a lot next season.
"Indeed, Martin St-Louis' men will be the third team in the Eastern Conference to travel the most kilometers in 2024-2025 with a total of approximately 69,684 kilometers." - TVA Sports
That's nearly 17,000 kilometers more than the Ottawa Senators! Ouch.
You can guess that this will inevitably have an impact on the team's success, or at least on the players' energy levels.
It's intriguing to see such a huge difference between the Canadiens and the Senators, especially considering their geographical proximity.
In short, it will be an additional element of adversity that the Canadiens players will have to deal with, but we can console ourselves by saying that we have a very young team, full of energy and spirit.
"It should also be noted that the 10 teams that will travel the least next season are all in the East. Moreover, the Pittsburgh Penguins will be the most advantaged, as they will only travel 51,016 kilometers (or 31,700 miles)." - TVA Sports
Generally, Eastern teams travel much less than Western teams, which is why it is surprising to see the Canadiens so disadvantaged by this 2024-25 schedule.
