The Montreal Canadiens have just released an official statement regarding Mike Matheson.

The veteran defenseman is unfortunately injured, and his game is over.

Defenseman Mike Matheson will not return to play in tonight's game (upper body).

We can expect Lane Hutson to have a larger role for the remainder of the game against the Los Angeles Kings and throughout Matheson's absence, which (hopefully) will not be too long.

An Injury for Mike Matheson

See the official statement from the Canadiens.

If Matheson unfortunately has to be out for a while, expect to see Jayden Struble join the lineup, and expect Kent Hughes to call up a young defenseman from the Laval Rocket.

Will it be Logan Mailloux? Stay tuned.

Mailloux responded in the best way possible to the messages sent by his superiors, notably with a 4-point game, and he will probably be keeping an eye on his phone over the next few hours.

Matheson, aged 30, is a 6-foot-2, 196-pound left-handed defenseman.

The Quebecer earns $4.875 million per year until 2026, having been acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in July 2022 in the Jeff Petry trade.

Details will follow, but this is certainly a new situation to closely monitor with the Canadiens.

If it is a serious injury, it would be another huge blow to the organization and to Martin St-Louis' squad.
