Following the trade that sent Jake Allen to the New Jersey Devils yesterday, there's an important detail to note that has somewhat flown under the radar.

Yes, the trade remains excellent, but know that the bad news is that Kent Hughes has slightly handcuffed himself for future trades.

It will become extremely difficult to trade players like Brendan Gallagher or Josh Anderson within a year.

Kent Hughes can only retain one salary in a trade for the next 15 months

"Montreal has now used up all of its 3 salary retention slots for this season, and has 2/3 occupied for next season." - David Pagnotta

"A team can only retain 3 salaries at the same time. The CH has just used its last right of retention on Allen." - Nicolas Cloutier, TVA Sports

"Next season, the Canadiens will pay Jeff Petry and Jake Allen a total of $4.3M to not wear its jersey." - Alexandre Pratt, La Presse

The point here is not at all to criticize the transaction concluded yesterday by Kent Hughes, it remains solid, but it was necessary to highlight an important element that could change a lot for next season.

At the same time, if the CH is not selling next year, it won't be too much of a problem, so let's hope that's the case.
