As we reported on Tuesday evening, Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield made a wonderful gesture for Johnny Gaudreau.

He decided to give up his jersey number 22 and change it to 13 in honor of the person who passed away last week under tragic circumstances.

A terrible accident that claimed the lives of brothers Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau.

That said, the excellent Alexandre Tourigny from RDS has just revealed an interesting piece of information.

Gary Bettman had to approve Cole Caufield's jersey number change because it was done during a period when such changes are prohibited

Even though this change was technically forbidden, the NHL made an exception for Caufield, while specifying that they don't like a player changing numbers so close to the start of the regular season.

«According to Alexandre Tourigny from RDS, Cole Caufield changed his jersey number after the deadline to do so, but the NHL made an exception to allow him to switch to number 13 in honor of Johnny Gaudreau.»

Kudos to the NHL! It would have been disappointing if they had forbidden this change and strictly enforced the rules in this case.

We can thus imagine that Logan Mailloux, who has also recently changed his jersey number, made his decision some time ago. He had a deadline to meet.

We can't wait to see number 13 in action at the Bell Centre!
