The Montreal Canadiens announce a major change on defense
The Montreal Canadiens have just made a big change on defense, and we may have just gotten our answer for the opening game.
The term 'major' is too often overused, but in this case, I truly believe it applies.
It's a major change, and one that says a lot.
In short, know that the defensive pairings have indeed been changed, and Lane Hutson has just been paired with David Savard (replacing Arber Xhekaj).
This seems to give us a strong clue about the Habs' intentions with Hutson.
Lane Hutson paired with David Savard: is his spot in the lineup official?
That's what many experts believe.
What stands out the most to me from this formation: Lane Hutson plays on the left of David Savard. Just like in his 2 games at the end of last season. I have a strong feeling this is the Habs' plan for October 9th!
The pair of Xhekaj and Barron could very well be the third pair for the opening game.

During a training camp, there are changes you should be cautious of, and there are changes that are very revealing.
In Hutson's case, I believe this is a truly revealing change:
For those hoping to see Lane Hutson start the regular season in Montreal, here is a pretty clear sign, and it's great news.
It's not surprising at all, given how incredible he's been since the start of camp, but it's finally taking shape.
David Savard had nothing but praise for his new young defense partner.
My final prediction for the Montreal Canadiens' 2024-2025 defensive lineup (assuming full health) is as follows:
Matheson - Guhle
Hutson - Savard
Xhekaj - Barron
Mailloux
In reality, the last spot seems to be between Logan Mailloux and Justin Barron, but Mailloux is at a disadvantage as he can be easily sent down to the Laval Rocket without having to go through NHL waivers (unlike Justin Barron).
We'll have our answer in about ten days!
POLL |
Considering that Lane Hutson has his place in the lineup, just like Arber Xhekaj, what would you do? |
Mailloux to Montreal and Barron to waivers | 127 | 20.4 % |
Mailloux to Laval and Barron to Montreal | 171 | 27.4 % |
I would make a trade | 325 | 52.2 % |
