It's been several weeks now that we've been talking about the possibility of Patrik Laine being acquired by the Montreal Canadiens.

As you know, he requested a trade from the Columbus Blue Jackets organization, with whom he played only 18 games in 2023-2024, and it seems that the new general manager of the team, Don Waddell, is receiving calls regarding the Finnish forward.

A trade involving Patrik Laine is still being discussed today, and the Montreal Canadiens are still in the race

At least, that's what he stated to The Athletic, and it seems that he doesn't feel any obligation towards the player who enrolled in the NHL's player assistance program last January.

«Teams continue to inquire if there are any updates. I tell them: you need to be comfortable [with Laine] and I can't help you with that. I don't know the athlete personally. I'm not someone trying to deceive people.»

«There aren't many free agents available. If clubs have cap space today, they'll probably still have it tomorrow. I know some teams are interested.»

However, it's very likely that Laine will be traded only after leaving the player assistance program, and until then, Kent Hughes might turn to another option to improve his offense.

Patrik Laine will earn $8.7 million next season and will be eligible for full free agency at the end of the 2025-2026 campaign.
