While many expect the Canadiens to allow Mailloux to start the 2024-25 season in the National Hockey League and for Kent Hughes to give him a vote of confidence, the opposite might unfortunately happen.
Logan Mailloux could still end up with the Laval Rocket next season.
Why? Because waivers could hurt Kent Hughes and force him to make a decision that would be unfortunate for Logan Mailloux.
It will likely come down to these two young defensemen.
One will start in Montreal, and the other will start in Laval, but one of them has a significant advantage.
According to all indications, Barron will start in Montreal, and Mailloux in Laval, simply because of NHL waivers.
Even though Logan Mailloux has proven over the past few months that he is a top prospect for the Canadiens and ready to help the big club, he might have to return to the minor league team.
My colleague Cédrick Gervais explains it very well.
This is a topic that was discussed between former Montreal Canadiens scout Grant McCagg and Tony Marinaro.
We understand that the Canadiens don't want to lose Justin Barron for nothing through waivers, but it remains unfortunate for Mailloux (who doesn't deserve to be demoted).
This could send a strange message to the organization's young prospects.
In any case, this will be one of the major issues to watch closely next September during the Montreal Canadiens' training camp.
And you, what would you do in Kent Hughes's place?
Barron, 22, scored 11 points in 32 games with the Laval Rocket in 2023-24, and 13 points in 48 games with the Montreal Canadiens.
Mailloux, 21, scored 47 points in 72 games with the Laval Rocket in 2023-24, and 1 point in 1 game with the Montreal Canadiens.
