We knew that the rugged defenseman was going to be traded, and his name was linked to the Montreal Canadiens by some solid sources.
It seems that many fans and analysts were in favor of this acquisition, but obviously not at any cost.
Well, we now have our answer.
As illustrated by the BPM Sports network, Trouba was traded from the Rangers to the Ducks in exchange for Urho Vaakanainen (a former 1st-round pick in 2017) as well as a 4th-round pick in 2025.
Vaakanainen, 25 years old, has 141 NHL games under his belt and has accumulated 25 points. He really seems to be just a simple 6th-7th depth defenseman at this point in his career.
Given all this, we suspect that the price asked by Chris Drury from Kent Hughes in exchange for Trouba was very similar.
And you, would you have traded a 4th-round pick in 2025 + a depth defenseman to get your hands on the former captain of the New York Rangers?
Personally, I believe it could have been an interesting addition for this young Montreal team, and to stabilize the young defensive corps, but it's really not catastrophic to have missed out on him either.
Jacob Trouba, 30 years old, is a very tough and hard-to-face defenseman, standing at 6 feet 3 inches and weighing 212 pounds. He was the 9th overall pick in 2012 (1st round).
He has accumulated 28 points over the last two seasons and is under contract until 2026 at $8 million per year.
However, the reason he wasn't traded to Montreal or any other Canadian team is that Trouba didn't want to play in Canada, which perfectly explains why he was ultimately traded to Anaheim.
Further details will follow.
