The player who has garnered the most attention since the start of the Canadiens' camp, and even during the rookie camp, is undoubtedly Lane Hutson.

Fans, after getting a brief glimpse of him in two games last year, were very eager to see him back in action. For now, a few hours from his first preseason game, it's safe to say he's given his supporters plenty to be excited about.

It's not just the fans who love watching him play, but sports journalists and analysts as well. One of them, Tony Marinaro, has high expectations for the young Canadiens defenseman. He wouldn't be surprised if he becomes the first defenseman since Larry Robinson to produce at a point-per-game pace for the club.

«This guy will one day put up a point per game. I don't know how often it will happen-whether it's once, three times, five times-but if Lane Hutson ever has an 82-point season at some point in his career, I personally wouldn't be surprised. Chris Chelios, Andrei Markov, and P.K. Subban never did that.

That's saying something!

Last year, only four defensemen accumulated 82 points or more: Quinn Hughes (92 points), Cale Makar (90 points), Roman Josi (85 points), and Evan Bouchard (82 points). The idea that Hutson could one day join this elite group is quite enticing.

This weekend, former NHLer Ryan Whitney predicted on his podcast Spittin' Chiclets that the young Canadiens prospect could have a 50-point rookie season. If he reaches that mark, which is huge for a rookie, he might very well have a shot at 82 points.
