The Toronto Maple Leafs played the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night and came away with a thrilling overtime 4-3 win. It was not a great game for Toronto, even as they came away with the win.
Leafs versus Lightning
There were multiple miscues and defensive lapses that made the game seem out of reach after the first 15 minutes of the game. What also did not help was that starting goaltender Ilya Samsonov let in three goals on four shots. Toronto took the game over once Samsonov was pulled and Joseph Woll took over. Woll stopped all 29 shots he faced.
After the game head coach Sheldon Keefe had some tough subtle words for Samsonov while also confirming Woll will start the next game.
How the game finished
After the third Tampa goal Samsonov was pulled, the second goal and third point for Nikita Kucherov. At 3-1 down, it took two third period goals from Matthew Knies to tie the game, one at 12:11 and the other at 14:33.
If Woll keeps up the strong play, it will likely be him seeing a majority of the starts instead of Ilya Samsonov. It could be be a potential goaltending controversy in Toronto sooner than later.
The Maple Leafs have historically faced challenges in net, leading to playoff difficulties. Consistent goaltending is crucial for postseason success, but Toronto's inconsistency has often been their Achilles' heel.
