On this official day of the highly anticipated NHL draft lottery, here are the five possible scenarios for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens tonight.
One of these scenarios will come true.
There is one that would be the ultimate dream, and one that would be catastrophic.
First scenario (8.5% chance of happening):
The Montreal Canadiens win the 1st overall pick and get the incredible opportunity to draft Connor Bedard. The one we all want!
Second scenario (8.6% chance of happening):
The Montreal Canadiens win the 2nd overall pick and get the opportunity to draft their favorite player from the draft who is not named Connor Bedard. (like Adam Fantilli or Leo Carlsson)
The Canadiens therefore have a 17.1% chance of drafting in the top-2.
Third scenario (41.9% chance of happening):
The Montreal Canadiens draft in the top-5.
Fourth scenario (85.8% chance of happening):
The Montreal Canadiens draft in the top-6 and secure the services of one of the BIG-6 from this draft, a top-6 composed of Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson, Smith, Michkov, and Benson.
Fifth scenario (14.2% chance of happening):
The Montreal Canadiens move back, lose spots, and drop out of the top-6. That would definitely hurt.
See an excellent summary:
"A little reminder of the probabilities for the different selection ranks! The Canadiens have:
8.5% chance of drafting 1st.
17.1% chance of drafting in the top 2.
41.9% chance of drafting in the top 5.
85.8% chance of drafting in the top 6.
And a 14.2% chance of drafting in the 7th spot."
