At the time of the trade finalized by Kent Hughes with Winnipeg, involving Sean Monahan, the Montreal Canadiens were on track to draft in the 8th or 9th overall spot in the first round of the 2024 draft.
However, since then, everything has changed regarding this particular pick.
The Canadiens' losing streak could potentially be beneficial for the club's draft position.
Already a better pick as the Canadiens are unable to win without Monahan
A few weeks later, the pick is already much better.
It didn't take long, but the Canadiens currently find themselves with the 6th overall pick for 2024, and they have a very good chance of ending up with the 5th overall pick by tomorrow night.
It's getting interesting! With a top 5 overall pick, the chances significantly increase of landing Macklin Celebrini (lottery) or Cayden Lindstrom, Ivan Demidov and Cole Eiserman.
A file to follow over the next few weeks, but this first-round pick change is aiming positively for the future of the Canadiens.
Update on the 'reverse standings' following the wins by the Jackets/Sabres and the point earned by the Coyotes.
The Canadiens are 1 point away from the top 5 and.. we're starting to see the top 4 as a possibility, after all!" - Marc-Olivier Beaudoin
