Barkov suffered possible season-ending injury after hit from Leon Draisaitl
Aleksander Barkov suffered a possible season-ending injury last night in game two of the Stanley Cup Finals following a questionable hit from Leon Draisaitl.
Halfway through the third period of Monday night's game between the Oilers and the Panthers, Barkov had to leave the ice after receiving Draisaitl's elbow on the jaw.
The captain tried to brace himself, but the Oilers forward jumped and extended his elbow, visibly targeting the head.
Florida only got a two-minute power play, and Draisaitl remained in the game.
Check out the incident in the video below:
Head coach Paul Maurice didn't look too happy in his post-game press conference. If there were any good news to share, he would've told it.
Here's what he said instead:
"The league will take a look at it. They look at every hit."
"My feelings don't matter."
Worrying reports came out later, suggesting that Barkov's jaw could be broken, possibly putting an end to his season:
"Aleksander Barkov has a broken jaw. There are few injuries to the face that hockey players can't 'suck it up' from. Stitches or a broken nose, sure. Broken jaw, definitely not.
However, in the Stanley Cup Finals, players often push through important injuries to help their team win. Barkov, renowned for his great leadership, could play with a caged helmet, like he did earlier this season and like Zdeno Chara did in 2019.
Unfortunately, it's also possible that Barkov suffers from a concussion, which could keep him sidelined:
"Broken jaw and/or concussion possible for Barkov
If a broken jaw, could play with a cage like Chara in 2019
If in concussion protocol, assume Panthers will label Barkov day-to-day"
As for Draisaitl, the League should make a decision soon regarding his fate.
We should have more details to report before the puck drops on game three, tomorrow night in Edmonton.
