For somewhat unique reasons, Janne Niinimaa is a well-known name among Montreal Canadiens fans.

He recently made the news again after being mentioned in a passage from Pierre Gervais' new book:

«This player falls into the category of a few not-so-good ones I've come across over the decades. But he could not reach the level of a Cammalleri or a Niinimaa. He wasn't very friendly, but he still treated us with respect.»

In short, the player who was acquired by the Habs in the Mike Ribeiro trade with the Dallas Stars, is now facing legal problems in his home country, Finland.

Janne Niinimaa, who played 741 regular season NHL games and another 59 in the playoffs, has been accused of "serious tax fraud."

Prosecutors in Helsinki accuse Niinimaa of intentionally failing to pay his taxes over a long period. He owes them a lot of money.

Helsinki's prosecution team asserts that Niiminaa failed to pay taxes in 2019, leading to a tax debt of approximately 55,000 Euros, or just over $60,000 USD.

For this charge, prosecutors are recommending a five-year suspended prison sentence for Niinimaa.

Niinimaa did not appear in court yesterday to respond to the charge, but his lawyer denies everything.

A developing story.
