Major trade concluded between the Montreal Canadiens and the Colorado Avalanche this summer: a solid acquisition in Alex Newhook, according to Andre Tourigny
Last week, David Ettedgui mentioned on BPM Sports airwaves that he was not very keen on the addition of young Alex Newhook with the CH . According to him, this transaction is not like that of Kirby Dach last year, and we must be very cautious with the newcomer.
The former coach with Team Canada of the now new number 15 of the CH had more encouraging words. On the airwaves of 98.5FM, he agreed to talk about Newhook and what he can bring to a team:
"Firstly, he's a damn good guy. Newy is a good person. He's a guy who is in physical condition, very fast, with quick hands, he has a good shot. He's a guy who went to a good school in Colorado, it's a team that works very hard and falls back very hard. He's a guy who is also coachable, he is a quality person and I think he will be successful. He's a guy who has talent, he's a guy who needs an opportunity and I think he was a good player in Colorado and he will be a good one with the Canadiens."
"There is a question of payroll and there is a question that they had the opportunity to bring in Ross Colton and they made a choice with Colton who brings experience and a defensive game perhaps superior to Newy. It's easy from the outside to judge the choices. Colorado had a lot of offensive power and didn't really have an opportunity for Newy to play on the power play there. They needed something else. It doesn't mean that Newhook is less good or anything, it means they needed a different position on the team." - André Tourigny Last season, with the Avalanche, Newhook recorded 14 goals and 16 assists in 82 games. Also having played 27 career playoff games and having a Stanley Cup ring on his fingers, his experience is invaluable.
Newhook signed a contract with the Canadiens for 4 seasons, with a total value of 11.6 million dollars, which averages to 2.9 million dollars per year on the club's payroll. A salary that could very well be advantageous for the CH if he develops as expected.
Don't forget that he is only 22 years old and was selected at the 16th position in the 2019 draft, just behind a certain Cole Caufield...
