There have been a few trades this week in the National Hockey League, including one announced by the Vancouver Canucks involving a defenseman that particularly caught our attention.

Let's remember that the Canucks acquired defenseman Nikita Zadorov from the Calgary Flames in exchange for a 3rd round pick in 2026 and a 5th round pick in 2024.

Yes, that's very little.

What's the connection with the fact that Kent Hughes is a genius?

Not so long ago, the Canadiens traded defenseman Ben Chiarot to the Florida Panthers, and in that transaction, Hughes got a lot more than the Flames (even though Chiarot was traded much later in the season).

"As part of this transaction (involving Ben Chiarot), GM Kent Hughes obtained Ty Smilanic, a fourth-round pick (Cedrick Guindon) and a first-round pick in 2023. This first-round pick was partly used to acquire Alex Newhook." - Raphael Simard

It's incredible to see the difference.

3rd and 5th round picks for the Flames vs a prospect, a 4th round pick, and a 1st round pick for the CH.

Many analysts have enjoyed comparing the two transactions (the one between Calgary/Vancouver and the one between Montreal/Florida), because we're talking about two very similar defensemen, who brought back very different returns.

In short, it's a great reminder that Kent Hughes made a solid deal with this trade, and that it has resulted in a very good young player in Alex Newhook.
