While the Pens have been actively trying to offload Petry's hefty contract and have been unable to do so, Mike Matheson has become a stalwart on the Montreal Canadiens' blue line and has been shining (in addition to being an incredible teammate).
This transaction between the Canadiens and the Penguins has become catastrophic for the Pens.
Today, it goes even further. A speculation that is causing a lot of buzz here has surfaced.
As a new buyout window is set to open in a few days (towards the end of the week), the Penguins might make a big decision to free up the $3.2 million they need.
According to circulating information, two players are at risk of being bought out, with one in particular that you are familiar with.
You guessed it: Jeff Petry.
The other name is Mikael Granlund, but it seems less likely at this stage in his case.
Petry, who earns $6.25 million per year, is currently handcuffing his general manager from acquiring star defenseman Erik Karlsson.
The chances of Petry playing another game in Pittsburgh are not very high, as per the circulating rumors.
Furthermore, Petry has already declined to be traded to the San Jose Sharks.
It's a situation to keep an eye on, but imagine the scenario! Imagine the reactions here in Montreal if Petry's contract were indeed bought out at the end of this week!
