This seems to clearly indicate that the Montreal Canadiens' management prefers Emil Heineman (and Oliver Kapanen) to Pelletier, but it hasn't always appeared that way.
As recently reported by the well-known Pierre LeBrun, the Canadiens were once involved in trade negotiations for Jakob Pelletier.
During the most recent episode of his podcast, which can be found right here:
Pierre LeBrun mentions that, in fact, there were real negotiations in the past between the Canadiens and Flames for a trade involving Jakob Pelletier, but at the time of these talks, the Calgary GM didn't want to trade the young Quebec forward.
There's another interesting aspect of this news from Pierre LeBrun, and it's when we realize that Montreal and Calgary completed a trade in February 2022, right at the moment when Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton were very interested in Pelletier.
Here's the trade:
To Montreal:
Emil Heineman + Tyler Pitlick + 2022 1st round pick + 2023 5th round pick
To Calgary:
Today, some sources suggest that Jakob Pelletier could have potentially been part of that deal, but the Calgary Flames refused to include him.
Instead, they offered Emil Heineman as a quality prospect to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Toffoli.
We know the rest.
Today, who would you pick first for your hockey team? Emil Heineman or Jakob Pelletier?
Heineman was the 43rd overall pick by the Florida Panthers in 2020.
Pelletier was the 26th overall pick by the Calgary Flames in 2019.
