Clearly, Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens are active in the NHL trade market.

Several well-informed insiders have confirmed this, including Pierre LeBrun, Frank Seravalli, David Pagnotta, and Darren Dreger, but now Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman has brought up a more concrete option.

A trade between the Canadiens and the Sharks involving Matt Benning?

In the latest edition of his podcast "32 Thoughts," Friedman indeed confirmed several pieces of information regarding Montreal and the trade market.

Kent Hughes is reportedly looking to add a right-shot defenseman and a gritty forward.

In this context, Elliotte Friedman mentioned a specific name that could be targeted by the Montreal Canadiens for defense.

He brought up the name of defenseman Matt Benning from the San Jose Sharks.

I'm not sure what a player like Benning could bring to Martin St-Louis's lineup, but since it comes from an expert like Friedman, it's certainly worth mentioning.

Matt Benning, 30, is a right-shot defenseman standing 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighing 203 pounds. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in 2012 and has accumulated 102 points in 463 career NHL games (17 goals and 239 penalty minutes).

He's particularly known for his defensive play, and it's worth noting that he earns $1.25 million per year through the summer of 2026.

Do you think he's a player who could add a little extra to the Montreal Canadiens' lineup to keep them "in the mix"?
