According to information from the excellent Marco D'Amico, as reported by TVA Sports, an NHL source is talking about a possible surprise trade coming for Montreal.
Kent Hughes, who has been very quiet so far this summer on the trade market, may still have a few tricks up his sleeve.
Now that he has settled all the contracts he needed to, notably with Justin Barron, Arber Xhekaj, and Kaiden Guhle, the general manager can focus on the trade market.
And on that subject, here is a very intriguing development, as a "well-placed NHL source" has just revealed a possible trade coming for the Canadiens.
A Surprise Trade by Kent Hughes? Oilers and Islanders Targeted
See an excerpt from the article that just came out on the TVA Sports website.
"Now that he has settled the contracts of all his restricted free agents, Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes could turn to his secret weapon: salary cap space, which possibly includes the long-term injured reserve list.
This is what a 'well-placed' source working in the NHL told journalist Marco D'Amico."
This famous secret weapon could involve a certain Carey Price:
"Montreal is in an enviable position with an owner [Geoff Molson] who is willing to spend up to the cap, but also exceed it if necessary," explained the source in question.
The Canadiens have $5.5 million at their disposal, but placing Carey Price's $10.5 million contract on the long-term injured reserve list opens the door to all sorts of possibilities."
Kent Hughes could thus take advantage of the financial problems of teams like the New York Islanders or the Edmonton Oilers, two teams that will clearly need to make moves before the start of the season due to the salary cap.
"Never underestimate the Canadiens when it comes to a surprise trade during the summer period," the source emphasized.
We naturally think of a previous trade, precisely concluded in August 2022, when the Canadiens acquired Sean Monahan and a first-round pick from the Calgary Flames in exchange for future considerations.
The Flames had to clear cap space in the NHL salary cap at that time.
A story to follow in the coming weeks.
