While the name Trevor Zegras makes many dream, other options are on the table for Hughes in the NHL. One of them could very well be in Buffalo and his name is Casey Mittlestadt.
The 8th overall pick in the 2017 draft has accumulated, for the moment, 42 points (12 goals) in 49 games this season, placing him at the top of his team's scoring list. You might wonder why the Sabres would want to part with him?
His contractual situation, as he will become a restricted free agent next summer, could push Kevyn Adams to put him on the trade market. The 25-year-old forward could thus be sacrificed to make room for Jiri Kulich, Matthew Savoie, Noah Ostlund, and Isak Rosen, who are knocking on the door of the organization.
Knowing that Mittlestadt will be without a contract next summer and that Buffalo could, following his trade, put more money on other players, could Adams accept a trade like, 2024 1st (WPG) + Justin Barron?
Kent Hughes will have options on the table and he will surely do his homework across the league. The GM has proven, since taking office, that he can surprise as very few of his transactions come out in the rumors. A surprise could very well happen at the next draft, and it will surely not be the name you expect!
