Defenseman Adam Boqvist Officially Claimed Off Waivers
Defenseman Adam Boqvist was claimed off waivers in the National Hockey League.
We have a rather unusual situation here, and here's why.
Based on behind-the-scenes information, Kaiden Guhle's injury, and the Laval reassignment announced this morning, there were reasons to believe that Kent Hughes and the Canadiens had submitted a claim to acquire young defenseman Boqvist.
He is a right-shot defenseman, a promising talent, and was the 8th overall pick in the 2018 draft.
However, the New York Islanders were the team that ultimately claimed Boqvist.
Did the Montreal Canadiens Miss Out on Adam Boqvist by Just 24 Hours?
What makes this situation remarkable is that the Islanders were just behind the Montreal Canadiens in the NHL standings yesterday. (Meaning they were just ahead of Kent Hughes in the waiver priority order.)
Today, thanks to their victory yesterday and the Canadiens' loss, the Islanders have moved ahead of Montreal in the standings. (Which now puts them behind Montreal in waiver priority.)
But, as you might have guessed, it was yesterday's standings that determined which team had priority to claim Adam Boqvist.
If Kent Hughes did indeed place a waiver claim on the young right-shot defenseman, he was literally 24 hours away from securing Boqvist.
«The Islanders are ahead of the Canadiens in the NHL standings today, but they were behind Montreal yesterday, so they had priority over Adam Boqvist.»
It's rare to see something like this happen.
More details to follow.
