As we mentioned over the past few weeks, a trade between the Montreal Canadiens and the New Jersey Devils is generating a lot of buzz.

While Kent Hughes is currently searching for a right-handed, reliable, and defensively solid defenseman, the name Johnathan Kovacevic has resurfaced.

I think it's fair to say Kent Hughes has done a good job as the Canadiens' general manager over the past few years, but in my opinion, he missed the mark with this trade.

Kovacevic represents everything Martin St. Louis' team desperately needs right now.

Let's remember that last June, Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens traded defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a 2026 fourth-round pick.

Today, I am convinced that Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton would love to undo this trade.

An Excellent Article on the NHL's Official Website About the Trade Between the Canadiens and Devils Involving Johnathan Kovacevic

In the past few minutes, the NHL's official website revisited this trade.

Kovacevic now forms one of the best defensive pairs in the entire NHL, according to advanced statistics, which says a lot.

«Kovacevic holds no grudge against the Canadiens. Quite the opposite, he says he's grateful to the organization.

I suspected there was a possibility of a trade for me, he said. I didn't know when it was going to happen. I figured there was a chance during the draft. The two draft days happened in Vegas, and there was no trade. So I thought I was staying with the Canadiens. But the day after the draft, I learned I was headed to New Jersey.

I'll keep very fond memories of my two years in Montreal, he added.

He also shared an emotional statement reflecting on his time in Montreal:

«I will cherish my two years in Montreal as a very special memory,» he continued. «It was a unique moment in my life. I loved my two seasons with the Canadiens. I had the chance to play for a team rich in history, and I played at the Bell Centre every night. I still watch the guys' games (Canadiens). I followed Thursday's game against Nashville. I know how amazing it feels to win in that building.

There were tougher moments during my time in Montreal, but I grew through adversity. I am a better defenseman today because of my days in Montreal. I learned so much, there are lessons I will never forget.»

Good luck Kovy!
