The news of the tragedy involving Johnny Gaudreau was extremely poorly handled by some.

Last night, a «journalist» made a post saying that he had heard that Johnny Gaudreau had just passed away, but he wasn't 100% certain.

This was followed by a huge wave of unhealthy curiosity and horrible speculation, lasting all night (until the official announcement by the Columbus Blue Jackets the next morning).

The individual in question later deleted his post, but the damage was done.

Even though he was right in the end, it's clear that his lack of judgment had terrible consequences for Johnny Gaudreau's family and close ones, including his brother Matthew.

The «journalist» in question has just been fired due to his mishandling of the Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Gaudreau situation

After receiving comments like this from reputable journalists:

«A word of advice to budding sports journalists:

Some things aren't worth reporting first.

When it comes to the tragic death of an athlete, and to a lesser extent, their retirement announcement, just let the player/team/family release a statement and be the source to share that news.

You can write your story in the meantime, and publish it as soon as it becomes official.

There is literally nothing to gain by making this information public before it's appropriate.»

- Tony Androckitis

In the end, it cost the young reporter his job.

Once again, we extend our sincerest condolences to the Gaudreau family and loved ones who are going through an absolutely horrible ordeal.
