Trade for a replacement for Johnny Gaudreau: Don Waddell makes an announcement and sets the record straight
Following the tragic death of Johnny Gaudreau, many analysts have already discussed the impact of this loss on the Columbus Blue Jackets from a hockey perspective.
Personally, I thought it was far too early to discuss, but their general manager, Don Waddell, was willing to address the question in the past few hours.
Let's remember that some journalists have already pointed out that the Blue Jackets will need to make moves before the season starts to meet the NHL's salary floor.
In fact, the contracts of Patrik Laine ($8.7 million) and Johnny Gaudreau ($9.75 million) have been removed from their books in the last few weeks.
Don Waddell comments on the situation following the tragic death of Johnny Gaudreau
Even though it's too soon to talk about it, and in his position, I would have completely avoided the question, the Blue Jackets' general manager had this to say.
I know there are questions regarding our team, how we will move forward without Johnny, and the impact this loss will have on our team. These questions will be addressed another day. For now, our priority is to support the Gaudreau family.'
- Don Waddell
Well said!
It's absolutely not their priority right now, at least for the time being, and in any case, it would be utterly ridiculous for Gary Bettman and the National Hockey League not to find a solution to accommodate the Blue Jackets.
Is Bettman really going to penalize an organization for a tragedy like this? That would be extremely poorly received, at least in my humble opinion.
