The 2022-23 NHL season is about to begin, and not surprisingly, young forward Cole Caufield's entry-level contract is already up at the end of the campaign, so he is eligible for a contract extension.
If Kent Hughes and Caufield's camp can't come to an agreement in the next few months, number 22 will be a restricted free agent (RFA) next summer.
Louis Robitaille, head coach of the Gatineau Olympiques (QMJHL), was present at "La Poche Bleue" and gave his opinion on the matter.
He made some predictions about Caufield's next contract:
"I expect it to be settled by Christmas. I think they're going to want to go for the maximum, between 6.5 and 8 million. It's going to depend on his start to the season, too. They have confidence in Cole and they want to build around him. I don't think they're going to let this drag on, but at the same time, Cole is going to have to start strong to reassure management and to convince them to give him that big long-term contract."
So for an eight-year, long-term contract, that would give a total pact ranging from $52 million to $64 million. If we aim in between, that would give $58 million total.
It's an interesting case, because we all know very well the immense potential of Caufield, but you have to admit that the sample of success in the NHL is still low.
Should Kent Hughes wait to see how Caufield's season starts, before signing him long term, in your opinion? The price could go up, but it could also confirm some things.
Caufield could therefore rely on the contracts signed by Jordan Kyrou, and by a player like Tim Stützle, who just signed for 8 years and a little more than 8 million dollars annually.
Stützle, 20, has 87 points and 34 goals in 132 career NHL games.
Caufield, 21, has 60 points and 31 goals in 97 career NHL games, including the playoffs.
That gives you a good idea.
What would you do with Caufield? Would you wait, or would you sign him immediately? How much would you offer him?
