With National Hockey League training camps literally hours away, and with the vast majority of free agents having been signed (either via a professional tryout or a standard contract), P.K. Subban is still free as a bird.

Many observers believe that today, we got a big clue about his possible next destination.

The Boston Bruins are decimated by injuries, especially among defensemen, and they have big holes to fill quickly right now.

Charlie McAvoy will return in December and Matt Grzelcyk will return in November. They are important pieces of this defense and will be out for a good part of the season.

We can add to that the names of backs Mike Reilly and Jakub Zboril, who are very uncertain cases to start the campaign.

The door is wide open for Subban.

On this subject, today, the GM of the Boston team, Don Sweeney, even gave some clear indications. He mentioned that, even if, for the moment, the Bruins have not yet signed any players in professional trials, this could change soon.

Sweeney seemed to announce an imminent signing, and all indications are that it will be a defenseman.

Don Sweeney, on professional tryouts in camp: "We have a final decision to make. I don't know at this point. There's one that's on hold. We've talked to several guys and some have made the choice to go elsewhere based on opportunity.

Right now, no invitations to announce, but there's one that's hanging out there that's on hold that may be announced soon."

- Mark Divver, quoting Bruins general manager

Imagine Subban in a Bruins jersey... Ouch! It's obviously not done, but reading what several knowledgeable journalists are saying, it seems to point in that direction.

In any case, there are many clues and a lot of smoke. To be continued!

In 77 games last season, the 33-year-old defenseman collected 22 points.
