The 2022 draft is likely to be very exciting, considering the many prospects of quality that are there.

The potential first choice, Shane Wright, was part of the Canadian team at the World Junior Hockey Championship, which was just cancelled.

Wright was the first centre of that team, and to be honest, he wasn't exceptional.

Grant McCagg, a former NHL scout, was not particularly impressed with the 17-year-old. Recall that Canada crushed Austria by the 11-2 score and the main player only got one assist...

"If Shane Wright was really a franchise player, he should have been able to collect more than just an assist, considering the quality of his line against Austria? Wright is an excellent prospect and is in danger of being drafted first, as the player pool is not exceptional this year."

The best example McCagg could give was Alexis Lafrenière. The Quebecer was the first choice of the draft in 2020 and we agree, he is far from being dominant.

"Lafrenière was fantastic at the World Junior in his draft year, even better than Wright. He only has eight points with the Rangers this year. I know I'm repeating myself, but maybe Wright won't come out first after all."

McCagg was clear, just because a player is not selected at the top does not mean that he cannot become an excellent NHL hockey player.

If the CH speaks first at the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, will they actually choose Shane Wright? To follow...
