Despite the fact that the team qualified for the playoffs this year, things could be very different for the Bruins next season. Not only is Patrice Bergeron's status uncertain, but forward Brad Marchand will likely miss a good portion of the season due to hip surgery that will keep him out of action for at least six months.
And as bad things never happen alone, my colleague Keven Mawn of Fanadiens.com reports that the Bruins will also be without the services of defensemen Charlie McAvoy, Matt Grzelcyk and Mike Reilly for a fairly long period.
McAvoy, the Bruins' leading defensive scorer this season with 56 points in 78 games, will miss six months of action due to shoulder surgery. Grzelcyk will miss five months due to shoulder surgery and Reilly will miss three months due to ankle surgery.
It's a situation that could give Bruins GM Don Sweeney a lot of headaches. But what if a Habs defenseman could help the Bruins?
Jeff Petry, who is likely to be traded this off-season, could very well be a solution to all these Bruins losses.
However, it is known that Kent Hughes would have to be quite greedy in his demands for his defenseman and the idea of trading a player to big rivals is not something we see regularly, but in the situation the Bruins are in, I think Don Sweeney should at least make a call to his counterpart in the Habs.
